To make the list: the singer must be a woman; the love lyrics must be obvious; and the love object must be unmistakably a woman. Not friendship love, but undisguised sensuality, an open expression of same-sex attraction.
Please feel free to circulate the list and offer suggestions.

I’m not at all certain that Katy Perry should make the list. Her song and video make it more like she’s playing it up for a guy than her own real feelings. On another note, Two Nice Girls should definitely be on the list.

I’d add “Gotta Get Over Greta” by The Nields. Can’t find an mpeg or a video, but here’s a site with the lyrics:
http://www.nields.com/greta.html
And I don’t agree about Katy Perry. The song only mentions her boyfriend once, in the chorus. The fact that the song is about curiosity doesn’t mean it’s about pleasing men.

Interesting list! You’ve forgotten a very powerful song from my teenage years: High School Confidential by Rough Trade. Carole Pope sings clearly about a girl making her “cream her jeans” etc., etc.. Carole is out, too. Bring on the Canadians!!!

Love that you included “Crimson and Clover”. Only real Joan Jett fans know about that cover, and that it first appeared on her VERY FIRST album post-Runaways, long before anyone asked the question about whether she was a big ole dyke.

Fair enough about Kate Perry. I’m a Jill Sobule fan so perhaps I’m bringing some bias there. Good thought on Rough Trade (swoon).

Speaking of Pink, her duet with Peaches – “Oh My God” – is pretty dirty and pretty overtly girl-on-girl….

Whoops, forgot the video:
It’s a live version, so there’s no Peaches – but there’s a lot of cheesy-yet-hot stripper action, and Pink in a hat she apparently borrowed from Rob Halford.

Hi Hannah:
What a superb choice. I posted 4 separate links. Personally, I have three distinct preferences, but others are already in two discernible camps. I’m sure it’s quite obvious.
Despite our stated preferences, we all yearn for that seemingly just beyond. The late, craft sexologist, Cynthia Slater defined a “top,” as such. It was some one who could guide you to a place beyond which you thought you could ever go. But at the same time, enable you with the realization that you were capable of still more.
Thanks again Rabdrake

What does Let’s Get This Party Started by Pink have to do with lesbian love?
That being said, cool idea. I’ve wished a list like this existed for a while now. Also, thanks for only including songs that specifically relate to same sex affection. Even gay or bi singers tend to mask their songs by making them vague and saying “you” instead of “she.” And I’m sick of it.
rabdrake said,

Hi Lecy:
Thanks for the feedback. You said some “mask their songs.” If I can find a video cover or a particular treatment which underscores an open same-sex expression, it’s onto the list. e.g. “Crazy” – Alanis Morissette #45. There is an original version Pink did of “Let’s get this party started” #39 with three women on fabrics ala The Gymnast. It featured tribad sex between Pink and another performer. Also, there were several highlighted shots of “100 footers” in the audience. So I bootstrapped it. Check out the sample I just found. A tad lesbo?
Found the FULL-LENGTH. Your feedback was inspiring. Props Lecy.
