PINK Re: the Miley Cyrus performance ??

“Am I into it?” Pink questioned in an interview with E! Online. “No, I think it’s tacky.”

“She’s really freaking talented; she’s beautiful,” Pink continued. “She can sing her ass off and to go up there and do that? She’s cheating herself and she’s cheating the rest of us… She can do what she wants. People can like it if they want. I’m not going to buy it. She can do better. I’ve seen her do better.”

I trust this from Pink will give Miley creative inspiration.

Crazy by Alanis Morissette cover 2005. An oldie but goodie. She’s in perfect voice. Her cover is 5 Star. Alanis preserves the best of Seal’s original. Also she adds her own unique version introducing an edgy same-sex subtext!

LA VIE d’ADELE Graphic novel by Julie Maroh

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR – released May 26, 2013. Winner Palme d’Or at 2013 Cannes Film Festival . Starring Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux. Director Abdellatif Kechiche. Adele, is a fifteen year old high school student in a nascent love with, Emma (Lea), an older art student The same-sex scenes are reputed to be so explicit as to raise the spector of censorship. In the 66 years of Cannes, it was unprecedented that the Palme d’Or was given to the film, as well as, the two actresses.

Sweet Darlin’ Woman by Meg Christian released 1993 – vj Sunsong23.

The Fortune Teller with Claire Yvonne & Paola Cro directed by Paul Mazzio.  NB Claire’s performance is the cat’s pajamas. This lesbian gem is a throwback. It’s reminiscent of the days of the silent B&W “grinder loops”, complete with honky tonk music, grainy negative, title cards and sound effects. You will be left wanting more!

Marie by Laura Berkson performed by Vox Femina  Los Angeles – vj casaprime.

You Can Sleep While I Drive by  Jewel & Melissa Etheridge – live duet – (0:01 through 3:31)  – vj MyyyTunes3

It starts with the eyes, always with the eyes! Jewel, in particular, almost  never breaks eye contact. Gradually, she engages Melissa’s eyes. Watch the body language throughout, e.g. 3:07-08 and the oh so subtle purse of Jewel’s lips toward Melissa at 0:41-42. One of the finest mixtures of passion and performance in a live duet, ever recorded.

Everybody knows I’m her man.” “In some of my relationships with a few of my women friends, I play a certain role. Heh, this is really getting in…I know, I hope my father’s not watching this. He just doesn’t know what to do. The strait jacket’s coming. But you know I always told my dad – you know gays, lesbians, he just has to get used  to it. One of the nieces and nephews is gonna be one, he’s just gotta get ready. So what I said was ah to Beanie, who’s the love of my life. My husband understands this, that we’re married. To make the list: the singer must be a woman; the love lyrics must be obvious; and the love object must be unmistakably a woman.  Not friendship love, but undisguised sensuality, an open expression of same-sex attraction.

Please feel free to circulate the list and to make suggestions.

  1. B.D. says:

I’m not at all certain that Katy Perry should make the list. Her song and video make it more like she’s playing it up for a guy than her own real feelings. On another note, Two Nice Girls should definitely be on the list.

  2. I’d add “Gotta Get Over Greta” by The Nields. Can’t find an mpeg or a video, but here’s a site with the lyrics:

And I don’t agree about Katy Perry. The song only mentions her boyfriend once, in the chorus. The fact that the song is about curiosity doesn’t mean it’s about pleasing men.

  3. Donimo says:

Interesting list! You’ve forgotten a very powerful song from my teenage years: High School Confidential by Rough Trade. Carole Pope sings clearly about a girl making her “cream her jeans” etc., etc.. Carole is out, too. Bring on the Canadians!!!

  4. realsupergirl says:

Love that you included “Crimson and Clover”. Only real Joan Jett fans know about that cover, and that it first appeared on her VERY FIRST album post-Runaways, long before anyone asked the question about whether she was a big ole dyke.

  5. B.D. says:

Fair enough about Kate Perry. I’m a Jill Sobule fan so perhaps I’m bringing some bias there. Good thought on Rough Trade (swoon).

  6. […] Ultimate Lesbionic Mix This person posted their version of the ultimate lesbionic music mix, and it inspired me to make my own, only […]

  7. Hannah Mae says:

Speaking of Pink, her duet with Peaches – “Oh My God” – is pretty dirty and pretty overtly girl-on-girl….

  8. Hannah Mae says:

    Whoops, forgot the video:

It’s a live version, so there’s no Peaches – but there’s a lot of cheesy-yet-hot stripper action, and Pink in a hat she apparently borrowed from Rob Halford.

  9. rabdrake says:

    Hi Hannah:

What a superb choice. I posted 4 separate links. Personally, I have three distinct preferences, but others are already in two discernible camps. I’m sure it’s quite obvious.
Despite our stated preferences, we all yearn for that seemingly just beyond. The late, craft sexologist, Cynthia Slater defined a “top,” as such. It was some one who could guide you to a place beyond which you thought you could ever go. But at the same time, enable you with the realization that you were capable of still more.

    Thanks again Rabdrake

  10. Smorl says:

  15. Lecy says:

What does Let’s Get This Party Started by Pink have to do with lesbian love?
That being said, cool idea. I’ve wished a list like this existed for a while now. Also, thanks for only including songs that specifically relate to same sex affection. Even gay or bi singers tend to mask their songs by making them vague and saying “you” instead of “she.” And I’m sick of it.

    • rabdrake says:

      Hi Lecy:
Thanks for the feedback. You said some “mask their songs.” If I can find a video cover or a particular treatment which underscores an open same-sex expression, it’s onto the list. e.g. “Crazy” – Alanis Morissette #45. There is an original version Pink did of “Let’s get this party started” #39 with three women on fabrics ala The Gymnast. It featured tribad sex between Pink and another performer. Also, there were several highlighted shots of “100 footers” in the audience. So I bootstrapped it. Check out the sample I just found. A tad lesbo?
Found the FULL-LENGTH. Your feedback was inspiring. Props Lecy.

  16. barbara says:

This is a wonderful site. I’m surprised nothing by Holly Near (either alone or with Ronnie Gilbert) made the list.

  17. rabdrake says:

    Hi barbara –

Thanks for the feedback. Did a search for Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert (I’m a longtime Weaver’s fan) et al.

Posted infra under “Cultural Lesbiana at its best.”

A medley of songs and photos of some of the luminaries of women’s music and LGBT rights.

Sorry to be a pill, but in order to make the g2g love song list, the singer must be a woman; the love lyrics must be obvious; and the love object must be unmistakably a woman. Not friendship love, but undisguised sensuality, an open expression of same-sex attraction. An underlying video often works to bootstrap an otherwise ambiguous ditty, e.g. song #41.

Please feel free to circulate the list and to make suggestions.
